Getacross began in 2008, as a grassroots campaign to challenge local and government authorities who insisted that a walking and cycling crossing was not possible. Many Aucklanders were sick of years of delay and stonewalling by transport authorities. That spirit grew into a massive public demonstration of protest in May 2009, when 5,000 people surged across the Harbour Bridge in protest at lack of action by authorities.
The 2009 Bridge March was a crucial turning point which led to a coalition of Aucklanders coming together as the SkyPath Trust, chaired by Christine Rose and project managed by Bevan Woodward, with a project team including committed campaigners, professional engineers, architects, and business leaders who believed a private AHB pathway solution could be developed
This Government promise is a direct result of the vision for SkyPath and SeaPath, which was developed by the SkyPath Trust, and the encouragement - and sometimes protests over many years by Getacross and its supporters.
Thousands of Aucklanders got behind the Getacross campaign. Their passionate support created a Government change of heart on access across the AHB. Now, they want confidence that NZTA will deliver the best option for that active transport crossing.
So until the Government’s promise is realised, and NZTA completes active transport access across the AHB - Getacross will continue to be the voice of Aucklanders who believe in the vital importance for our city of walking and cycling access across the AHB.
