What is 'access to opportunity'?
Access to opportunity describes the ability of people to get to the things which enable and enrich their lives. It includes everything from picking up groceries or purchasing clothes, to being able to access education, medical facilities and jobs. It also includes access to public places like parks and beaches, and the ability to visit family, friends and loved ones.
Access to opportunity is a way to talk about how easy it is for people to move around in their community in order to experience a healthy, fulfilling life. If access to opportunity is dependent on having access to a vehicle, then anyone who has difficulty owning, operating or affording a motor vehicle will have less access to opportunity.
What does inclusive access look like?
Ensuring Tāmaki Makaurau works for everyone means removing barriers which others may face and creating welcoming environments for the broad diversity of people living and moving across our city.
DignityDignity means that people aren't required to manage difficult situations or seek special treatment in order to be included. Things should 'just work' for everyone, regardless of personal differences. Diversity is normalised and doesn't draw attention from others.
For dignity, the environment is designed to be inclusive. |

Let's make Auckland inclusive
For a truly accessible, equitable city, our transport infrastructure needs to provide for a wide range of needs.
Let's give people the freedom to choose how they move, and make the harbour bridge safe for walking, wheeling, cycling and scooting.

Liberate the laneIt doesn't need to be difficult or expensive. Simply make one lane of the harbour bridge safe and accessible for the 40% of non-driving Aucklanders. We all deserve agency, dignity and independence - regardless of how we choose to move. |
