Liberate a lane: the low cost, elegant solution for walking & cycling the Waitemata:
Let's liberate a lane of the Bridge to enable Aucklanders to get out of their cars and walk, scooter, cycle, etc. The resulting reduction in vehicles means traffic flows will improve across the network.
See the Transport Minister Michael Wood's request for a trial on page 7 here. NZTA then chose to consider the Minister's request as a "permanent conversion of lanes on the bridge" (rather than the trial requested) and on that basis had their Board reject the Minister's request for a trial.
Click here for more info on this simple solution to a complex problem. However NZTA are very reluctant - their culture is to solve traffic problems through bigger roads. To make matters worse, they need to keep traffic levels up to maintain their funding which comes from the consumption of fossil fuels.
Please take a moment to email Hon Michael Wood, Minister of Transport that you support SkyPath and in the meantime, NZTA should trial liberating a lane to make our bridge multi-modal and provide travel choice to Aucklanders.
